Brazil is the best thing that happened to skateboarding ultimately. Of course, Brazil has always been a hot house of sick skaters (Edgar Pereira, leo Kakinho, Rony Gomes, Pedro Barros, Sandro Dias, Luan Oliveira, Bob Burnquist, Leticia Bufoni, Murilo Peres…), but since the RTMF Crew took over, the world is upside down.
Driven by a heritage of Masters and OG skaters, the kids of Florianopolis are taking down bowl riding to the next level and not only in the bowls but on image, content and video production. The last series from RTMF (that went up live just yesterday) is a proof that thing are brewing up and that we need to be ready for the changing future. Even someone like Jake Phelps is not missing any contests or events on the island.
After I interviewed Pedro Barros and Vi Kakhino, I met with Felipe Foguinho. Felipe already has a board with DropDead and a full fledge list of first class sponsors. He is in California to prepare for the next Vans Protec Pool Party. Here is this is what he had to say about his style of skateboarding and his arriving in the pro skateboarding scene.
isTia.Tv: How long did you wait to be pro? Felipe Foguinho: This is my first year. I was waiting for Drop Dead to invite me.
isTia.Tv: Where are the best skaters from? Felipe Foguinho: Skate is all around the world. It’s a hard question. The USA are where most of the skaters are, but many of the top one are from diferent country.
isTia.Tv: Tell me about the TV Bowl Series you are doing with Pedro. What is it about? Is it available only in Brazil? Felipe Foguinho: It was done around the idea of bringing to Brazilian people more footage and reality of what the bowl series is becoming. Of course Pedro (Barros) is the name to make this happen and will show how is his trip with his friends to all this competition around the world. It will be on Brazil ESPN+ only but also on internet for anyone. (note: isTia started broadcast the first episode yesterday).
isTia.Tv: Tell me about the day you saw you pro board. Did you prefer the board or the girl? Felipe Foguinho: Hahahahah, both!! It was a big surprise and I really was going crazy to see how my board would look like. But the girl was good too.
isTia.Tv: Is bowl riding in Brazil concentrated in Floripa or is it spreading all over Brazil? Felipe Foguinho: It’s getting all over now. Crazy!!! So many bowls are been building these days and good skaters are showing up!
isTia.Tv: When did you arrive at Vans for the Vans Pool Party Contest? Felipe Foguinho: On the 1st of may. My first time in California. I cant believe!! That bowl, it’s insane!!
isTia.Tv: Who is coming with you? Felipe Foguinho: RTMF crew! Leo Kakinho will skate the másters and Pedro pro. Vi Kakinho and Marco (vídeo Maker) came too as we are going to do another Bowl Series show.
isTia.Tv: Red Bull is investing a lot into Action Sports and skateboarding… How are they helping your personally? Felipe Foguinho: They are not. Nike, Drop Dead and Evoke are help me to start this.
isTia.Tv: Do you consider yourself more of a bowl rider, vert rider or is it bowl and vert the same beast? Felipe Foguinho: Only bowl. I can skate vert, but i grow up skating concrete and curves.
isTia.Tv: How many countries have you visited in 2012 and how many in 2013 (so far)? Felipe Foguinho: None in 2012 and New Zeland, Australia and USA in 2013 so far.
isTia.Tv: What was your best skate contest of 2012? Felipe Foguinho: Red Bull Skate Generation is the best event of all! The vibe, it’s so gnarly. People cry there ! The vibe it’s insane.
isTia.Tv: What skate contests are you going to do in 2013? Felipe Foguinho: Im going to try to do all I get invite.
isTia.Tv: Are you going at Bowl-A-Rama in Spain (La Kantera)? Felipe Foguinho: For sure! I hope I can cash some money from Vans Pool Party to help me to get there.
isTia.Tv: Have you seen the video of Alain GTX ripping bowls in La Kantera? Felipe Foguinho: Alain is my Idol. Such a good skater. I saw that vídeo back in Australia before he put it on internet and I could’nt believe how good he is!
isTia.Tv: Pedro and Vi skated La Kantera last year. Were you with them during the European tour? If you skated La Kantera, how is it? Felipe Foguinho: No I wasn’t man. I wish…
isTia.Tv: Pedro Barros seems invincible, what are the odds he will win Pro-Tec this year? Felipe Foguinho: Pedro is my best friend and I Always will believe that he will win, but this event is hard because that bowl make easy for the vert skaters and this can change every thing in the last minute!
isTia.Tv: The level of bowl riding is much more competitive this year than any previous years. Do you feel threatened by the Europeans? Felipe Foguinho: For me anything happens it’s good. I just wanna to keep doing it now.
isTia.Tv: You had a lot of videos and ads in the magazine ultimately. Which one did you prefer? Felipe Foguinho: I love the Drop Dead add! But Thrasher vídeos are the best!
isTia.Tv: Which one was more fun to do? Felipe Foguinho: It was really good to do the Drop Dead vídeo add! That girl, the session, my start as a pro!
isTia.Tv: Are you preparing a new video? Felipe Foguinho: This year I will concentrate on contest. It’s important for Brazilian skate industry to have good results. So maybe next year I will go more for video film.
isTia.Tv: What are your skate expectations for 2013? Felipe Foguinho: Man, I had a operation September last year and I just got back into skate just week before Bowl A Rama. I just wanna keep health this year and get recognized. Open some doors and keep travelling with Pedro.
isTia.Tv: What are you doing to prepare for the Vans Protec Pool Party? Felipe Foguinho: Just skate with my friends every day
isTia.Tv: Do you have (or are you working) on some special tricks? Felipe Foguinho: No man, this is not my type!
isTia.Tv: Do you feel ready for Protec and what are your expectations? Felipe Foguinho: Lets skate and see what I can do there! I liked this bowl a lot.
isTia.Tv: Where would you like to see bowl contests headed in the next few years? Felipe Foguinho: I would love to know that I will be able to travel around the world to skate. This is what I expect for the future. Bowl A Rama knows how to do a contest, I hope they go big! They know how to treat the skaters and its always havy parties.
isTia.Tv: What are the differences among the bowl riding contests where you have been? Felipe Foguinho: Contest its all the same when you are skating. What changes is the way the make it happens.
isTia.Tv: How do you feel about the current popularity of bowl contests and have there been any changes that you’ve noticed in regard to format, participants or judging? ? Felipe Foguinho: I can see a lots of vert skaters trying to get into the bowl now. Its good, but the judges kneed to know that vert tricks its not the deal when you skate bowl. You get to do lines, long grinds, use the coping block as much as you can and I love to see speed.
isTia.Tv: Do you see any changes that should be made in bowl contests & if so what? ? Felipe Foguinho: Judge! Its crazy!!! Hard to do it, but it can get better.
isTia.Tv: Sponsors? Felipe Foguinho: Nike flow, Drop Dead and EVOKE
isTia.Tv: Something you want to add? Felipe Foguinho: Thank you!
