Note from the admin: Mary Sweet is a skater from France who covered the Bacelona X-Games for isTia. She is working really hard in France to make girl skateboarding bigger and better than it is. Before the X-Games, she was hyped to finally meet the whole bunch of bowlriders that are constantly landing in the WCS girls top ten. She had a press pas that (we though) should have given her full access to the girl’s sesh. But no. What??? Well, NO is NO. Nobody could take pictures except if you were an official photographer from ESPN. Well, Impossible n’est pas Francais, right?… She sneaked in and… (hehehe) Here is what she had to say about the biggest money machine of the $kateboarding industry…
I went to the X-Games in Barcelona.
This is a huge event; maybe the hugest one ever did in Spain about skateboard when we’re talking about the money spent an won with skateboarding.
I just went to the girls training to take photos. After the trainings I decided not to come back into this because it made me sadder than making me happy to see these girls skating here. Yeah, for sure, they show to Europe and Spain that the skating girl’s level is still growing up hard but it also shows how skateboarding world becomes elitist. And I heard so many stories about huge police fines for skating in the city.. Actually I was sad to not see my friends from Barcelona or Europe skating this wonderful bowl only built to be skated by oversea skaters which have in their own home this kind of skatepark.
As you know, in Barcelona, there are no good skateparks even if now it’s maybe one of the most prestigious city for skateboarding all over Europe. The city of Barcelona decided to make the X-Games here this year. At the beginning I thought about a revolution but when I heard that the park will not be skateable by skaters from there and be destroyed the day next to the comp, it made me mournful.
What’s the point? Building a huge skatepark with street, bowl, vert and big air to destroy it a week later while skaters from Barcelona are waiting it for decades.. Make money. The entrance to see skaters skating like an hour or two was 26 euros; do you know with how many money a Spanish live for a month? Yeah for sure people will come, it’s spectacular but what image of skateboarding this event is giving to people? Will children start to skateboarding to be seen on TV and win money?
Skaters begin to hate skateboard because of this kind of huge event surrounded by money forgetting the meaning of skateboarding. Skateboarding world tears with their followers.
Here are some pictures of girls skating during the trainings:
